In detail

Everyone’s Everest?

Kilimanjaro is not a climbing mountain. That is what makes it so appealing to the amateur. It’s probably the only mountain that grants equal opportunities for trekkers of all ages and fitness levels to reach its summit.

You don’t need any alpine climbing experience, no crampons, ice axes, ropes or any sort of technical equipment required on alpine climbs unless you’re doing the almost technical Western Breach.

There are very few places on each route which requires you to use your hands as well as your feet. Mostly, it is just an uphill trek and any reasonably fit person stands an even chance of reaching the summit.

Volcanic activity

While two of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic formations are extinct — meaning that they are highly unlikely to erupt again — Kibo (the highest peak) is merely dormant, so there is the possibility that it could erupt. Estimates have the last major eruption dated to 360,000 years ago, but volcanic activity was recorded just 200 years ago. While Kibo is dormant, gas is emitted into the crater, causing several collapses and landslides, with the most extensive ones creating the area known as the Western Breach. While the name Kilimanjaro has its origins in the KiChagga word for “white,” it is becoming increasingly less so. While it still covered with ice caps and glaciers at higher levels, global warming is quickly changing the climate and scientists expect the famed snows of Kilimanjaro to disappear sometime between 2022 and 2033.

Your safety is our number one priority!

One of the integral aspects to Nale Moru near 100% success rate on Kilimanjaro is our diligence and implementation of effective protocols for the health and safety of every climber – from the food they consume to the medical support they receive.

Mountain Staff
Fair compensation and good working conditions

Nale Moru is run by an expert Kilimanjaro Guide, Rob have been leading trips to the roof of Africa for 13 years and has created a team of professional guides, He is pooling his years of experience as guide chiefly to empower the local community by providing opportunities for ourselves and others.
Nale Moru actively promotes fair compensation and good working conditions for mountain staff. We ensure our clients are well-served by a network of competent, trained and experienced guides and porters who are fairly paid and properly equipped.

We continuously uphold our ethical standard and that is reflected by our partnership with Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), the only NGOs that assist and effectively monitor partner companies treks to ensure fair and ethical treatment of staff.

Accordingly, we ensure that our staff member have the necessary gears and waterproof clothing to work comfortably and effectively.

We ensure that our staff eat sufficiently and well and have access to clean water and medical attention.

We ensure that our porters do not carry more than the recommended weight set by the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park authorities.

We ensure that staff tips are distributed fairly to the mountain guides, porters & cooks.

We pay above the recommended porter’s daily wages set by Mount Kilimanjaro National Park and Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project, and we are proud to say our team is the happiest on the mountain.

Environmental responsibility

Nale Moru complies with all Kilimanjaro National Parks environmental regulations. All of our trash is hauled out and measured at the exit gate, we supply gas stoves instead of firewood and charcoal and we use environmental friendly LED solar light in our mess tents.

We always strive to minimize our impact on the fragile mountain ecosystem since our livelihood is reliant on the healthy state of environment. We are devoted to ensure Kilimanjaro’s pristine environment stays clean for all to enjoy.

Mountain Cuisine

The menus for all climbs are specially prepared to provide a balanced diet of fresh fruit, vegetables, plenty of carbohydrates and protein. We select food items that are easy for the body to digest at high altitude and that deliver the necessary nutrition and energy required by the rigors of climbing. We can cater to a wide variety of special dietary requirements from vegetarian to celiac to raw food diets.

We primarily use fresh organic ingredients in preparing all of our meals on the mountain produced by the local farmers on the slopes of Mount Meru.

Our cooks undergo rigorous training and we have ongoing workshops to review menus and clients are always surprised by the sheer variety of tasty dishes they get on the mountain. The cooks are particularly vigilant in their hygiene practices since contracting stomach bugs are common for visitors to the developing world.

At camp in the morning, we will wake you up with a steaming cup of hot chocolate, coffee or tea and offer a full breakfast in the dining tent. And while other climbers are eating their cold lunch boxes on the trail, a delicious hot lunch will be prepared for you and served in our mess tent sheltered from the wind and chill on the trail along with your favorite hot drink – a small difference that makes a big difference on the mountain when it comes to resting and refueling.

Does it matter?

Do not be fooled by literature and Media, Kilimanjaro is the most taken for granted of all the 7 Summits, and while it doesn’t require any technical skills, training and health assessment will ensure that you can fully enjoy your trip, increase your chance of reaching the summit and are less susceptible to Altitude. No matter how fit your training is still important, it’s the altitude that’s going to challenge your body. You’ll need to commit yourself to a physical training regimen and that require some discipline. We recommend a varied physical routine to include strength training, aerobic cross training, and hiking (not necessarily at high altitude), simply to familiarize your body with the rigors and nuances of being on the trail. Generally, all things constant, the fitter you are, the easier it will be for you to handle the rigors of the altitude.
In the end it all comes down to Mind over Matter!
